Twittertale

Posted at Monday, December 17th, 2007

Twitter limits the amount of characters you can type, however many characters out there have figured out ways to extend it. Foamee was the first site that I found that leveraged Twitter, and then there was Overheard.it. I had to get in on the fun so I gathered some friends and put together Twittertale.

With the help of Gabe, Min and Jason the vision became reality. We use Twitter’s “track” feature and a little elbow grease to make the site work (Gabe can tell you more about those details). What results is a lot of fun.

We look to use some of the data in the future to show some stats, create some charts & graphs and an idea that might result in some fabulous prizes. Any suggestions on how to make Twittertale better are always appreciated, feel free to leave a comment in the post.

*update – new features*

  1. Nice work Doug! It looks like the use is really taking off. One idea worth considering… a “wash your mouth out with soap award” for the user with the most tales.

  2. Nick, that is one thing we have def thought of. We are just not sure how much we want to expose. A list of tweets we think is funny, but calling people out might be crossing the line. What do you think?

  3. I’m guessing I end up on there a fair bit.

Kudos for a novel use of Twitter!

  4. Thanks Lachlan, it was a fun little project, and like I said we have some more ideas for it. Stay tuned.

  5. Here are a few things I found that might be broke or need your attention.

When you go past the “home page” of the paper background is now missing. Works on Firefox and not on IE6 XP Pro.

When you go past the 9th page (http://twittertale.com/tweets/9) the “previous” and “next” links split to two lines. I’m using IE6 XP Pro in case that matters.

  6. Thanks John, Both should be fixed with the next push.

  7. Love it. I searched for my twitter name (mosqueda) and found a few entries, but I was the recipient – whew!

I’d like to see the whole list – sort of a George Carlin’s “what you shouldn’t type on Twitter”.

    Good work.

    Cheers – Dan

  8. We are working on an about page, perhaps we will disclose the tracked words. Thanks for the love Dan!

  9. haha, awesome!

however, it seems that one of your top 5 words (balls) gets used in a non-filthy way somewhat more often than it gets used as a curse word… so i don’t know if i would count that as a dirty word, personally.

  10. @bunnyhero – yeah that is one of the limitations of the technology we are using. However Balls is just a funny word to us anyways, so we added it to the list.
